Data sources

Where the numbers come from

My Analysis AI uses filings and licensed providers, shows the source and timestamp next to important figures, and says "Data unavailable" rather than estimating a missing number. An AI model is never a source of data.

Source hierarchy

  1. Company filings (SEC EDGAR) for financial statements.
  2. Official statistics (U.S. Treasury) for the risk-free rate.
  3. Licensed market-data providers for prices, history and reference data, with a fallback provider where one is configured.
  4. The last successfully retrieved value, labelled "Last updated N minutes ago", when providers are unreachable.
  5. "Data unavailable" when none of the above has the figure.

Providers

Role: Primary source for financial statements

  • Annual and quarterly income statement, balance sheet and cash flow (as filed)
  • Shares outstanding, fiscal year end, SIC industry code, filing links

Freshness: Updated as companies file; cached for up to 12 hours

Limitations: US SEC filers only. No segment, production, reserve or regulatory capital data in standard tags.

Role: Risk-free rate

  • 10-year Treasury par yield

Freshness: Published each business day; cached for 6 hours

Limitations: US dollar rates only.

Twelve Data

Connected

Role: Primary source for prices

  • Quotes and daily price history for stocks and ETFs
  • Symbol search and instrument type (stock or ETF)
  • Earnings calendar and estimates where the plan includes them

Freshness: Real-time or delayed depending on exchange and plan; every price shows its provider timestamp

Limitations: The Basic plan allows 8 requests a minute and excludes fundamentals, ETF profiles and holdings, and consensus estimates.

Role: Valuation fundamentals, estimates and peers (optional)

  • Annual income statement, balance sheet and cash flow (long history) where SEC filings are unavailable
  • Company profile, analyst revenue and EPS estimates, peer lists
  • Fallback quotes and end-of-day price history
  • Market and company news on paid plans (second news source after Bigdata.com)

Freshness: Statements cached for 12 hours, estimates 12 hours, profiles a day; quotes delayed unless the plan says otherwise

Limitations: The free plan allows 250 requests a day and covers US listings; estimates and some endpoints need a paid plan.

Bigdata.com

Connected

Role: Cited context for risks, catalysts and AI explanations; primary news source (optional)

  • Passages from regulatory filings, earnings-call transcripts and news about a company, with source and date
  • Market and company news headlines for the News section

Freshness: Company evidence searched over the last 12 months and cached for 6 hours; news searched over the last 3 days (14 for a company) and cached for 10 minutes

Limitations: Usage is metered in query units by plan. Never used as a source of valuation inputs.

Alpha Vantage

Connected

Role: ETF data, fallback statements and prices, news (optional)

  • ETF profile: holdings and weights, sector allocation, expense ratio, net assets, dividend yield, inception date, leverage flag
  • Daily adjusted price history with distributions and splits (ETF total returns, volume and liquidity)
  • Company overview ratios for ETF holdings (holdings-based valuation, country, industry and size exposure)
  • Fallback stock statements, quotes and daily history; earnings, estimates and revisions
  • News with sentiment by ticker and topic

Freshness: ETF profiles and company overviews cached for a day; daily prices for an hour

Limitations: Premium plan (75 requests a minute) configured in production. Does not publish ETF NAV, bid-ask spreads, yield to maturity or credit quality.

Financial Datasets

Not connected

Role: Company news (optional)

  • Company news by ticker

Freshness: Updated through the day

Limitations: Paid plans; coverage depends on plan.

Role: Macro data for equity and ETF research (optional)

  • US policy rate, inflation, GDP, labour market, Treasury yields, real yields, breakevens, credit spreads, VIX, dollar index
  • Daily Treasury yields used to measure bond-ETF rate sensitivity; 3-month T-bill rate for Sharpe and Sortino ratios
  • OECD and BIS series for other economies; daily exchange rates (Federal Reserve H.10)

Freshness: Each series at its release frequency (daily to quarterly); cached for 6 hours

Limitations: Works without a key (public CSV); a free FRED_API_KEY uses the official API instead.

Role: Euro-area macro data

  • ECB deposit rate, HICP inflation, GDP, industrial production, retail sales, unemployment, euro-area yield curve

Freshness: At each series' release frequency; cached for 6 hours

Limitations: Euro area only.

Role: Annual structural data

  • Purchasing power parity conversion factors
  • Current account balance (% of GDP)

Freshness: Annual

Limitations: Published with a lag of a year or more.

Role: Physical holdings of GLD

  • Tonnes of gold held by the GLD trust, daily

Freshness: Daily; cached for 6 hours

Limitations: GLD only.

Role: Futures curve for commodity-futures ETFs (optional)

  • WTI crude and Henry Hub natural gas futures contracts 1–4 (roll yield of oil and gas futures ETFs such as USO and UNG)

Freshness: Weekly and monthly; cached for 6 hours

Limitations: Free key required (EIA_API_KEY). Without it the futures curve and roll yield are shown as unavailable.

Role: AI explanations only

  • Written explanations of retrieved and calculated data

Freshness: Generated on request; market summaries cached for the day

Limitations: Never used as a source of numbers.

Features that need a provider that is not connected show "Data provider not connected" instead of placeholder data.

Freshness labels

Every price shows a label derived from the provider's own timestamp:

  • Live: the provider timestamp is under a minute old and the market is open.
  • Delayed · N min ago: the market is open and the price is older than a minute. Many exchanges are delayed 15 minutes or more on basic data plans.
  • Market closed: the last price of the session.
  • Last updated N min ago: the provider could not be reached and the last good value is shown.

ETF data

ETF profiles (expense ratio, net assets, inception, turnover, holdings and sector weights) come from the Alpha Vantage ETF profile. Total returns and distributions come from Alpha Vantage daily adjusted prices; when they are unavailable, Twelve Data closes are used and only price returns are shown. The valuation of a fund's holdings uses Alpha Vantage company overviews for its 25 largest holdings with a US ticker, and shows how much of the fund that covers. Bond funds use FRED Treasury yields and credit spreads; futures funds use EIA futures prices; GLD's gold holdings come from the issuer's daily file. Index levels are licensed, so each fund is measured against the most liquid fund that tracks its benchmark.

Not available from any connected provider, and shown as DATA UNAVAILABLE: the daily NAV and premium or discount, bid-ask spreads, yield to maturity and SEC 30-day yield, credit-quality breakdowns, issuer and index names, and fund flows (except GLD).
